How to make a starter for Amish Friendship Bread Date posted: 11/29/05 at 09:23:03

Does anyone here know what it takes to make a starter for Amish friendship bread?  I have read several different ways and am now confused.  the two most prominent ways are just flour sugar and milk,  but then there is one that calls for those three ingredients plus a packet of active yeast.
SO which one is the best way?  Any clue??
thanks.

A special thanks to B Richards who emailed this to us. (smile)

Amish Friendship bread
one cup flour
one cup sugar
one cup milk
stir then let sit
day 2, 3 ,4 just stir
day 5 add the flour, sugar, and milk again
day 6, 7, 8, 9 stir
day ten add the flour, sugar, and milk again,
then give one cup each to three friends.
with the remaining add:
2/3 cup oil
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs
1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 + tsp. cinnamon
Pour into 2 well greased pans dusted with cinnamon and sugar.  Bake 40 to 50 min. at 350 degrees.
May add fruit and nuts.....
If you want to keep a little started for later you can freeze one cup.  I kept it for more than a year and just made some the other day and it was fine.
Bon appetite
