SDR provided three trainings over the course of the year to early childhood care and education providers.  Two full day sessions were on Promoting Social Emotional Development in Young Children and Supporting Children with Challenging Behavior (CSEFEL Model), and one was a 12 hour Center-Based Mentors Training in the Process of Positive Behavior Supports.  Total attendance was 60, and included the entire staffs from:  4k, early childhood special education, EC/4k paras, Children's Learning Center (daycare), YMCA After School Program, and Family and Child Learning Center (Headstart);as well as administrators from each of these agencies and Family Resource Connection, Headwaters Birth to Three program staff, Ministry Rehab's occupational therapists, and 17 private daycare providers from the region.  Evaluations were positive, and the district has been approached about providing this training to the entire staff of the nine county Family and Child Learning Centers.

The DeForest Area School District has continued to present trainings to community providers.  This included a speech and language training in November, a Boardmaker usage and demonstration in January and the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards training in February/March.  These trainings have received positive feedback by all attendees.  Our Early Learning Committee met to continue planning for a preschool scholarship fund.  This continues to be a challenge.  In addition, the Early Learning Committee gathered community providers to initiate discussion on 4K options in the DeForest area for future planning.  We were able to purchase materials for itinerant services and the Boardmaker program for two sites that collaborate with early childhood program.  We plan to apply for an additional implementation grant for 2008-2009 to expand on our trainings, materials, collaboration and 4K discussion.

                              End of the Year Report for the Richfield School District  
 
      The Richfield School District is concluding the second year of our grant and we are excited about what has been happening with our early childhood, 4K and 5K programs.  We have established a combined early childhood special needs service delivery model between the two small districts of Richfield and Friess Lake.  The early childhood and 4/5K teachers plan together, share materials and integrate our groups for various activities.  Grant money has been used to purchase various materials used by these children.  
     Our communication committee planned a parent/child yoga class for 3-5 year olds during the month of February.   We also have an informational workshop for parents planned about sensory integration on May 29th.  In conjunction with the sensory integration workshop we are also having a make & take session to give parents ideas and tools to engage their children over the summer months.    
     Several books and videos have been identified and purchased as excellent additions to our parent resource library.  Home totes and learning kits continue to be sent home periodically with the 4K and some early childhood students.  We are purchasing more learning totes to address other developmental areas.  The committee is looking into the feasibility of developing an interactive website for the purpose of sharing experiences and/or exchanging information/resources in regards to early childhood education.  The preschool options mini-grant has made a positive contribution to our district’s early childhood and 4/5K program.

End of the Year report
2007-2008
 
At the beginning of the year conference we were introduced to a seminar that addressed challenging behaviors. We have found this information and the website at www.vanderbilt.edu/csefel to be extremely helpful with the use of visuals that address peer interactions and give students ideas on how to problem solve their conflicts with others.  We have implemented the use of these visuals in the collaboration with a preschool/childcare and early childhood special education. It has been exciting for us to see our students use these strategies on how to get along with others!  We also have had the opportunity to host community “get togethers” with others in the community who work with children of preschool age.  We shared ideas and discussed the WMELS.  This has helped us to make connections with others outside of the school building and grow the idea that working together is best for our preschoolers in the Oregon School District.

The Waunakee School District

The Waunakee School District is wrapping up it's 3rd year with the preschool mini-grant.   The collaborative committee (Partners in Preschool or PIP) has decided to continue meeting even though the grant itself is finished this school year.  The focus of this group will be to continue to collaborate in regards to preschool options, plan and hold community based trainings and work on a preschool scholarship program.
 
Thoughout the collaborative process additional options have been created for ECSE students in Waunakee.  In the Fall of 08 two co-taught classrooms will be added into the current options to best meet the needs of students.  These co-taught programs will combine Waunakee special education staff and private preschool programs and will allow students with IEPs in place who are not enrolled in preschool programming to benefit from a fully inclusive environment.  Waunakee will continue to offer itinerant ECSE services, itinerant SL services and ECSE classroom services in addition to the co-taught classrooms.  These preschool options are a direct result of the collaborative process that the mini-grant supported and Waunakee is very grateful for the opportunities that the grant allowed.

During the second semester, we found ourselves needing to switch our focus a bit. We found out that last year's efforts in educating community care providers were successful. This year we had triple the amount of referrals for preschool evaluation than our average over the past ten years! With our two primary preschool speech/language pathologist on maternity leave and our speech/language diagnostician on medical leave, we needed to give other district s/l therapists a crash course on "preschool options" and "functional goal writing" the McWilliam way. We also found that we needed to refocus our energies onto training staff within the district and had to postpone some of our community trainings. Next year we begin tracking our "cohort group." As the year unfolded, we realized that we needed to bring more district staff up to date with preschool options, ongoing asessment and OSEP outocmes. Many of our preschool, 4-K, 5-K and elementary special education staff members (including our director of special education and special education program support) met throughout the second semester. We previewed several evaluation and progress monitoring tools and elected to adopt the Portage for our district. We have held some mini practice sessions where we met in small groups and completed the Tool for Observation and Planning for a student the group had in common and reviewed the associated activity cards. We also reviewed the basics of NIPIP and began using Routines Based Interviews on a more regular basis. We have also had an opportunity to have more staff members observe and participate in a strenghts/needs based IEP meeting that concluded with functional goal writing. One of our staff members completed the four day CSEFEL training and will be teaching a course on Social Emotional Development of Young Children through our district staff development program. This twelve hour course is open to community care providers as well. We also sent a group of our preschool staff to an ELL training related to young ELL students. The knowledge we gained has been extremely helpful and as a result we have begun to change how we evaluate, educate and support preschool ELL students and their families. For the 2008-2009 school year, we will have an increase from two to three full time EC teachers and have increased the FTE for our S/L pathologists so that we can offer more itinerant services. We have also begun to explore a community partnership with the Pabst Farms YMCA and hope to team teach in their "Sunshine School."  We will sponsor the WIMELS training next year. We have also begun to explore a partnership with the Oconomowoc High School Family and Consumer Education Teacher so that we can work together with the high school students training to be licensed child care teachers. Lastly, we were able to get ProHealth to agree to have our district's Community Outreach Nurse serve the preschool special education population. Families of our preschool students with special education needs can get help with coordinating insurance coverage and medical care for their children. They can be helped with identifying and managing their own mental and physical health needs (depression, addiction, etc) as well as coping with the stresses of parenting and discipline. It has been an extremely busy year. We are hoping to be awarded the second year implementation grant so that we can expand on these activities and finally get our "Social -Emotional Literacy Kits," "Sensory Boxes" and "Language-Rich Play Packs" assembled and distibuted.

IDEA Preschool Mini-grant End-of-Year Progress Report  
Unified School District of Antigo  
 
With our mini-grant, we have expanded opportunities for our 3- and 4-year-olds with disabilities to participate in a 2 hour/day, 2 days/week kindergarten readiness program with typically developing peers.  The District is now able to serve nearly 50 children in this program which is available at four elementary schools in the District.  Our early childhood special education staff are thrilled with the progress these children are making.  These opportunities will continue for the 2008-2009 school year.  
 
The Love and Logic session hosted for parents in February was well-received - we hope to offer additional sessions next year.
 
While our district received a 4K start-up grant for DPI, 4K implementation for 08-09 was not approved.  While this was disappointing, our District is committed to revisiting 4K implementation for 09-10.
 
The Antigo school district has been fortunate to receive p/s mini-grant funds - children in our community have benefited!

Waterford Special Education Consortium (WSEC)

End of the year report for WSEC 07-08:
 
The Waterford Special Education Cooperative (WSEC) hosted a Ready, Set, Go Training along with Union Grove Consortium and Burlington Area School district on February 19, 2008, with approximately 35 community staff and parents in attendance.  Workshops covering the areas of Sensory Integration, Moving to Learn, Speech and Language Development along with several Make and Take workshops were held throughout the second semester as well.  The continued support and attendance from area daycare/preschool staff at these workshops shows an increased collaboration and interest in working together and supporting children.  The WSEC has also begun establishing a lending library of resources, including children’s books on the topic of disabilities, resource books on various disabilities/strategies, sensory equipment, visual timers, file folder CDs and the like, to be used within the community settings.  A revised brochure has been developed and printed to further explain preschool options and also reflect a change occurring in the WSEC which is effective July 1, 2008 when the Waterford Graded School District official joins the cooperative.
