Wonewoc-Union Center Mid-Year Progress Report

Wonewoc-Union Center Mid-Year Progress Report-Pre School Mini Grant

Our team attended the Pre School Mini-Grant meeting in conjunction with the Wisc. Early Childhood Education and Care Conference (9/2007).  We have had a planning meeting, along with four team meetings to discuss the expansion of opportunities for preschool students with disabilities to participate with their non-disabled peers.  In conjunction with Head Start and 4-K, there is an ongoing review of schedules and programs to determine ways to expand our options for inclusion along with teacher opportunities for collaborative planning and team teaching.

We also developed curriculum benchmarks in collaboration with EC, Head Start, 4-K and Kindergarten teachers.  Benchmarks outline targeted skill attainment for children ages 3-6 in the areas of Fine Motor/Sensory, Gross Motor, Early Literacy, Communication, Self-Help, Approaches to Learning, Social/Emotional, and Math and General Knowledge (utilizing the revised Model 2007 Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards as a guide).  These benchmarks will be put into an informational brochure for parents and teachers.   The purpose of these benchmarks is to enable teachers to identify and reduce learning/developmental gaps to facilitate transition into regular education programs and to enable early detection of at-risk students.

The early childhood teacher attended the Wisconsin Statewide Autism Training (November, 2007) because she identified this population as an area of priority when looking at effective programming and inclusive opportunities.

Mid year report from Brodhead School District.

We attended the mini-grant meeting in Wausau in Sept.  In October, with help from Sue Albert, our EC team did a presentation to our Elementary staff at a staff meeting about preschool options and the changes in our program.  We thought it would benefit them to better undertstand why they see us coming and going doing home visits and itinerant services.  We wanted to arm them with information and help them understand some of the changes we were making so that they would be able to answer questions if they were approached by someone in the community.  In October, we also did a presentation to our school board, so that they would also understand the changes we were working on in our EC program.  In November, our team attended a conference in Portage about collaborating with families.  We also attended LINK training as a team.

Our next projects for the remaining school year are to contact and network with our referral sources, make a printed EC brochure, and to work more closely with birth to three transitioning kids from their services to school services.  We are working toward doing facilitated IEP's and writing fuctional goals.  We are individualizing all of our kids placements and how we meet their needs.

The most challenging aspect of preschool options for us has been finding common planning time and common time to discuss kids now that we are out and about more.  We are also challenged with large caseloads and finding the time to provide individualized placement options.  We see the benefits for children and our parents are so wonderful about carrying over, but we do feel overwhelmed and crunched for time vs. when we were seeing all of the kids in the classroom.  We will be using our next inservice day to have open discussions about what is working and what is not and brainstorming as a team to make the necessary adjustments.

Mid-year progress report from Monona Grove School District:
1/18/2008

We were awarded $5000 this year to continue our training sessions with area preschool teachers and childcare providers. We had our first  training session this past November and will have a second in February and third in March. With all three trainings we are bringing in speakers and purchasing resource materials for each of our community sites.

Judy Ballweg, Preschool Math Resource Teacher for the Madison Metroploitan School District,  presented for our November training.  Her training was titled "Early Math: Nurturing Mathematical Thinking through Activities, Questions, and Conversations with Preschool Children."  Judy shared many great ideas and materials from her own experiences with young children.  We purchased the book, Mathematics: The Creative Curriculum Approach for each site and each participant received a copy of Rosie's Walk and a set of pattern blocks.

Our February training session will be presented by Melissa Smith, one of our district's school psychologists.  Melissa will offer a training based on Discipline with Love and Logic and How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids WIll Talk.  We will purchase both of the corresponding books for each site.

In March, we have Rita Kehl from Madison Metropolitan School District coming to do a training titled Play-Based Literacy Development.  Rita and Judy Ballweg both work with the Launching into Literacy and Math program in Madison with Rita's specialty being early literacy.  We will be purchasing resources to go along with Rita's presentation as well.

As we did last year, we are paying for area teachers and childcare providers to attend this year's Launching into Literacy and Math program in Madison.  This year we have 30 people attending at least one of the three sessions offered this winter.

Three training have been scheduled for February and March.  The first is a two day training for center based mentors in the process of positive behavior supports.  We plan to have these people in place to support their staff attending the March trainings on  Promoting Social and Emotional Development in Young Children and Supporting Children with Challenging Behavior, based on the CSEFEL model.  These trainings target daycare and early childhood staff, 4k teachers, paraprofessionals, and B-3 and family visitors.

Mini grant update for 07-08

Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton held their Child Development Day on November 1, 2007.  Eleven community resource booths were present including the county lead screening. Twenty volunteers (staff, students and community) helped with the event. The community responded with donations towards books for each of the 29 children attending the event. Five children returned from the previous year to be re-screened. Evaluations were very positive.

An early literacy event is being planned for March 13 with the Family Reading Night committee Tom Pease will provide afternoon and evening assemblies which Child Care and the community are invited to.

Kits are being assembled to travel between 5 child cares in the area supporting Creative Curriculum and targeting fine motor, prewriting skills. They should be in place the first week in February.

Collaborations with Family Resources will result in two night trainings offered in April for Child Care Providers.  Information will be shared on Developmental Screenings, a review of Creative Curriculum Resources bought with grant money, and a presentation of visual strategies with ready to use take home activities. A “make and take” time will be available with use of the laminator and dye cuts.

Contacts have been made with Sue Albert to facilitate a Preschool Options discussion with our collaborating council.

Staff will attend The Places We Go: Itinerant Services in WI at Waukesha Co. Tech College and the Collaborating Partners Video Conference.

Midyear Report
Edgerton School District

The Edgerton School District was awarded $5000 this year to continue working in the area of expanding preschool options for serving children with disabilities in their natural environments including community childcare sites.    The District has been working through a variety of avenues over the past several years to network, collaborate and develop positive relationships with the community childcare facilities in an effort to expand options for serving children with disabilities.

The District has identified a team of staff members who are working diligently to meet the goals of the grant.  The team has met throughout the year on a monthly basis to plan and implement several activities to support these efforts.  These activities include:  1.) Expanding it’s offering of  teacher and parent education seminars; 2.)  Creating an educational and informational DVD that will be distributed to parents of pre-school children who may need to access school services; 3.) Researching and implementing a community-based play group that will be supported by the community and school in a collaborative manner.

To date seven teacher seminars have been offered for teachers of our 4K program. (The District’s 4K Program is currently housed in 5 community child care centers.)  Additionally, three parent seminars have been conducted in which District staff and community childcare staff collaboratively offered parents a variety of educational and informational materials.

The District currently has a draft written of the script for the informational DVD.  It is being edited by several staff for content and accuracy.

The team has completed an extensive survey of play groups that are already in operation in neighboring communities.  The team is currently connecting with interested community folks to further discuss, plan and establish the community’s first play group.  It is hoped that additional play groups will follow suit creating additional natural environments in which the District can serve children with disabilities.

Finally, individual team members have attended a variety of networking meetings, workshops and conferences on the topics related to the goals of the grant including the Wisconsin Early Childhood Education and Care Conference and the Link:  Preschool Options and the IEP.

The Richfield School District is midway through the second year of our grant and we are excited about what has been happening with our early childhood, 4K and 5K programs.  We have established a combined early childhood special needs service delivery model between the two small districts of Richfield and Friess Lake.  The early childhood and 4/5K teachers plan together, share materials and integrate our groups for various activities.  Grant money has been used to purchase various materials used by these children.
Our communication committee has met several times and is currently planning a parent/child yoga class for 3-5 year olds during the month of February.  In April/May, an informational workshop for parents is being planned about sensory integration.  We are also planning a literacy based make & take workshop to give parents ideas and tools to engage their children over the summer months.
Several books and videos have been identified as excellent additions to our parent resource library.  Home totes and learning kits continue to be sent home periodically with the 4K and some early childhood students.  The committee is looking into the feasibility of developing an interactive website for the purpose of sharing experiences and/or exchanging information/resources in regards to early childhood education.  The preschool options mini-grant has made a positive contribution to our district’s early childhood and 4/5K program.

The Waunakee School District was awarded $5000 to continue working on expanding options to preschoolers within our community.  Our community group, called PIP (Partners in Preschool) meets once a month to collaborate and work together.  Using the grant dollars we have held 2 community based trainings this Fall for parents, preschool teachers and providers and plan to have 3 more trainings this school year.  The topics for the trainings this year are Fine Motor Development, Support Strategies for Preschoolers on the Autism Spectrum, Relaxation Tools and Techniques, Positive Parenting/Behavior Management and Show and Share (a make it and take it night for new activities and ideas).

The PIP group is also working on establishing a scholarship program for preschoolers, and are hopeful that an additional local grant will be awarded to help financially support this goal.

Using grant dollars we have purchased adaptive materials that are being used with preschoolers in their natural environments.  These materials have been positive supports and a good use of the grant dollars.

Sue Albert has come to Waunakee to help us work on preschool options and this support has been very beneficial to our group.  We currently are supporting  1/3 of our ECSE students within their natural environements and are exploring additional options for the next school year.

Oconomowoc Area School District

We are fortunate to have been awarded this implementation grant so that we can continue the important work we started with the help of last year's planning grant. This year we are working to enhance services provided to preschoolers with special edcuation needs by the following activities: providing training for care givers about developmentally appropriate activities and materiels/equipment to support individually selected activities; attend two out-of-district trainings and hold two in-district trainings related to best practices in preschool education (with emphasis on speech/language and motor skill development and managing challenging behaviors); improve collaboration among district preschool staff by increasing opportinities for face-to-face time, observations across settings and increased itinerant support in district preschool programs.

During the first semester, we sent the second half of our preschool special education team to LINK's training along with some of our Birth-to-Three staff members and our special education program support teacher. We have also had a staff member attend a traing on the social-emotional development of young children based on the findings from the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early  Learning (CSEFEL). We have scheduled a panel discussion on early speech/language, motor and social/play skills for for community care providers in March and another session in April to share the CSEFEL information. We are also in process of scheduling WI Model Early Learning Standards training for our community. We began exploring the development of "Social-Emotional Literacy Kits," "Sensory Boxes" and "Language-Rich Play Packs" that we will share with/provide for community care providers (including parents).  Our Staff Development Council approved a second year of our "Best Practices in Preschool Education" collegial study group. We have met three times and have discussed improving parent relationship, observation as an assessment tool, how to further improve itinerant services and have drafted the document "Overview of Preschool Options Support Services" that will be provided to in-district and out-of-district early educators. In addition, our Director of Curriculum and Instruction approved a request for the early childhood team to be excused from school-wide SIT (School Improvement Time) so that we can meet as a group to continue working on our grant activities. We still are required to attend district-wide SIT. Finally, we have moved a full time early childhood teacher out of the classroom to prvide itinerant support to children at local preschool/child care sites, homes and 4-K classrooms. We have also expanded our itinerant speech/language services.

IDEA Preschool Mini-grant Mid-Year Progress Report
Unified School District of Antigo

With our mini-grant, we have expanded opportunities for our 3- and 4-year-olds with disabilities to participate in a 2 hour/day, 2 days/week kindergarten readiness program with typically developing peers.  The District is now able to serve nearly 50 children in this program which is available at four elementary schools in the District.  Our early childhood special education staff are thrilled with the progress these children are making.

We are offering a Love & Logic session for parents of preschool to kindergarten age children on February 26th.

Our District is updating data collected during our Early Education Matters 4K feasibility study (2004-2005) including surveying parents regarding their interest and preferred structure of 4K programs, meeting with our four local child care centers (including Head Start) regarding their interest and ability to partner and projecting financial implications of 4K implementation.  At the February Board of Education meeting, the Board will vote on whether we will submit a 4K start-up grant.

Lots of exciting things are happening in Antigo with the help of our mini-grant funds!

Implementation Grant Mid-Year Progress Report for
Juda School District
The Juda School District received $2500.00 for an implementation grant for the 2007-2008 school year. We held two Early Childhood Council Meetings. It was decided at the upcoming meetings that are main goal this year would be training and implemeting a play group as an option for the children of Juda . We are going to look into training that we can attend as a council.
The Early Childhood Special Education /4K Teacher attended the the Pre-School Mini-Grant meeting in conjuction with the Wisconsin Early Childhood Education and Care Conference in September.
We will continue to hold Early Childhood Council meetings to discuss play groups.
Implementation Grant End of the Year Report Juda School District
We were very excited to take a team to the LINK Training in Sussex. The team included the Special Education Director, 4K/Early Childhood Special Education Teacher and two parents. It was an excellent training and it gave us many things to think about.
We ran out of time and energy to implement a play group for this school year. This will be the first thing on our agenda for next year. We will have an Early Childhood Council meeting in the fall to discuss this. Sue Donahoe gave us an example of what a playgroup schedule may look like. We hope to partake in some training next year either at our school or C.E.S.A. We strongly feel that getting a playgroup started in Juda would be very powerful for our community.

We had another very successful year with three training opportunities for childcare providers and preschool teachers supported by the Preschool Minigrant.  This year we had 19 teachers/providers attend a preschool math training in November, 15 people at a play-based literacy training in March, and 21 teachers at the April training titled: "Helping Children Know How to Help Themselves".  Video tapes of the trainings were made available for people who were unable to attend the trainings. This year we were able to include family day care providers in some of the training opportunities.
With each of these trainings we also  purchased resource books and materials for the preschools and child care centers and purchased 3 additional books which are available for check out at the public school library.
We again paid for 25 teachers/providers to attend Launching into Literacy and Math Insititute and were able to send teachers to the Wisconsin Early Education and Care Conference in the fall.  In the spring some teachers also attended the JoLyn Beeman Lecture Series titled "Tools of the Mind:  Developing Self-regulation through play."
