Cedarburg School District - End of the year report for implementation grant.  May, 2009

The Cedarburg School District has had a very successful year serving children with special needs working collaboratively with our community partners.  We have established a very postivie working relationship that continues to grow with our community partners.  Through our grant we have been able to purchase boardmaker for two community preschools along with inservicing them on the features.  Both schools are up and running, using boardmaker for the benefit of all preschoolers in their programs.  The Cedarburg Early Childhood Staff has also successfully offered four inservices to our community partners and parents of young children in our community.  Topics have focused on Parenting/Behavior, Ear infections and impact on speech development, Fine Motor/Sensory Motor development, and finally Functional Communication and Speech/Language Development.  These offerings have been held at our new center and have been a great success.  We are in the process of looking to next year and expanding our relationship through developing an Early Childhood Council and more collaborative inservices with our community partners.

The Richfield Joint School District No. 1 had a very successful year implementing the grant into our school and community and having the early childhood committee provide parent workshops that were very beneficial.  Our communication committee met several times this year and had their final meeting at the end of April.

During the second half of the year we had a literacy workshop for families that centered around Polar Bear Polar Bear What Do you Hear?  We had movement activities and different interactive centers that families could go to and complete make and take items.  In May our OT talked to families about sensory development and the families made make and take projects that they could use at home with their children.  Several books and videos were added to the parent resource library with a new check out system.  We also had a successful 4K and 5K Screening in May where we screened a record number of students.

The preschool options mini grant has made a positive contribution to our district's early childhood 4/5K programs.

2008-2009 was a successful year for our EC staff who worked hard to ensure that the Preschool Options model continues to drive programming for our youngest learners. We provided support to parents and families through our inclusive 4K program and a combination of home/daycare and community settings. Using facilitated IEPs has improved parents' engagement in and understanding of the IEP process. We offered family centered activities one Friday each month for all of our families with 4 year old children which were well attended and well liked. We also expanded our lending library to include more children's books and toys as well as parenting and developmental materials. To meet our goal of smooth transitions, we met with our local Birth to Three coordinator several times this year and plan to meet with other referral sources at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year.

Because our community doesn't have many community-based options for providing support, we surveyed parents of young children (ages 0-6) to better understand whether they feel a need for more community-based options. We will host a forum with community partners in the fall of 2009 to discuss how the community can address parents' desire to have more evening and weekend family activities. Also based on information learned from the survey, we developed a brochure to help parents and other referral sources better understand Early Childhood and Preschool Options.

The Burlington Area School District utilized the mini-grant money for the 2008-2009 school year in a variety of ways.  We hosted monthly workshops for area preschool, day care staff and parents of children in the Early Childhood programs.  Through this process we connected and built a strong relationship with 9 area community providers.  We also have put additional materials in the hands of the providers to follow through suggestions offered for children within their centers.  The materials include a variety of handwriting tools, sensory tools and fine motor materials to develop skills within the community centers.  Our overall experience has been positive on both the district and the community point of views.

The Washington/Caldwell School District mini-grant funds through the Waterford Special Education Cooperative, enhanced the programming within the preschool options for the area.  In addition to hosting multiple meetings throughout the year to provide resources for the community providers and parents, we also expanded our lending library with additional resources.  The networking and collaboration that has taken place with the community locations through the year has been great.  The staff within the district and the staff in the community centers along with the parents involved in the options with their children have all worked well together to strengthen the connection and make for positive outcomes for kids!

Mequon-Thiensville School District (MTSD)

The Mequon-Thiensville School District (MTSD) focused on three goals during the 2008-09 school year.  The first goal was to implement a collaborative, integrated preschool program at one of the community preschools.  Eight ECSE students attended Range Line Preschool with their typical classmates as their district placement.  Two ECSE staff (teacher & paraprofessional) planned and worked as a team with the preschool teachers.  This was a learning experience for all involved!  We received positive comments from (all) families, and parents of the ECSE district children were very happy with the placement and all the social opportunities for their children.  Now we look forward to year two (2009-10) of our collaborative relationship with our Range Line partners!  Grant money was used to purchase Creative Curriculum materials, including the "In Action" training DVD.  Together, district and preschool staff attended trainings on the Creative Curriculum.  Implementation of the Curriculum will continue to be a a focus for next year.

A related goal (goal 2) was to provide inservice training for our collaborative partners AND for all community EC program providers.  We offered three evening inservices on the following topics:  "Handwriting Without Tears", "Discipline with Dignity", and an introduction to "Early Childhood Councils".  All inservices were well attended.  Members from an active EC Council in the Southeast Milwaukee area presented information on how their Council was started, members involved, and topics & schedules.  This inservice addressed our third goal, to gather information on establishing an EC Council in our community or county.  We plan to develop an active and ongoing Council during the 2009-10 school year.
